Library

Jervis Homestead, built in 1857, located at 613 North Washington St., Rome, NY, was the home of John B. Jervis. Jervis, a civil engineer, was born in Huntington, NY, in 1795. Upon his death in 1885, he left his residence and personal library to the city of Rome, to establish a public library. Jervis Library opened on July 15, 1895.

Clinton's Ditch (Location of Initial Excavation of Erie Canal)

Clinton’s Ditch marker is located in Erie Canal Village, 5789 Rome New London Rd., Rome, NY, and Routes 46 & 49. Governor DeWitt Clinton was the true father of the 363-mile “Big Ditch” - The Erie Canal.

 

Historical Monuments in the Rome, New York Area: 

De-O-Wain-Sta (Tablet)

The De-O-Wain-Sta tablet was moved three times. The first dedication was at the Post Office at the corner of North James and Liberty Street. After the Post Office was demolished, the tablet was moved to the YMCA on West Liberty St. Finally, it was moved to The Sentinel lawn in the 300 block of West Dominick Street. The plaque was commissioned by Fort Stanwix Chapter, NSDAR, in 1905 and was designed by Paul Cabaret of New York City. The sites chosen were all near the Oneida Carrying Place (a portage where canoes were carried between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek).

Stars and Stripes First Flown in Battle (Tablet)

Fort Stanwix National Park mailing address is 111 East Park Street, Rome, NY. The Fort is located in downtown Rome, NY, at the intersection of North James Street, Black River Blvd. and Erie Blvd East.

Fort Stanwix Siege

During the siege of Fort Stanwix British Troops occupied this park. Today a statue of Colonel Peter Gansevoort stands guard in the center of the park, with the Rome Historical Society located in the background.

Upper Landing Place (Tablet)

The Upper Landing tablet is found in the 200 block of East Whitesboro Street, near the Mohawk River. Access is by a path below the Erie Canal Bridge, and to the right as you enter the city of Rome. Fort Williams was near this site, the eastern point of the Carry.
